You don't have to be Jewish

Compliance and Appeasement

You don't have to be Jewish

The haunting melodies and those first musical sounds of Jewish music I heard would come from the phonograph, playing 78 rpm records. On radio listening to Jewish music on WDAS and WHAT, Growing up in Philadelphia and if my black labrador dog, could talk as we both listen to the music, she would have a thick Jewish accent.

The great cantors of the day filled our home with music and prayer. We didn't have to wait for Yom kipper to hear "Kol Nidre". Cantor Yussela Rosenblatt was on my record shelves between a brown sleeve, just waiting to share his genius with my family.

If I wasn't listening to Jewish music being played, then it was music performed or composed by Jews. My favorites were Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor, George Jessel, Sophie Tucker, Fanny Brice, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Woody Herman, singing or swinging to the big bands. The music composed from, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin,Rodgers and Hart, Harold Arlen and other Jewish song writers.

I can remember every Sunday sitting with my parents and grand parents at the Lincoln theater in Philly, that was the Jewish Broadway and thrill to the music, laughter and there was a lot of crying in the Yiddish theater. My memories are treasured, seeing the great actors and actresses of the Yiddish theater of, Aaron lebedeff, Molly Picon, Menasha Skulnick, Jenny Goldstein, The Adler Family and Muni Weisenfreund (Paul Muni).music.

My family were affluent and we had everything and I could not comprehend what the Great Depression was all about, but there ws a blue and white tin box nailed in the kitchen wall...it was for "The Jewish National Fund" My father explained that Jewish families not so fortunate would drop a few hard to come by, pennies into the Pischa, but he would drop silver dollars and he would say "Next year in Jerusalem" "This land is mine,God Gave This Land To Me" Shortly after that I would honor my family by being honored by the state of Israel from the first president of Israel, Chaim Weitzman in 1948 with my chosen words... "Compliance and Appeasement a Luxury Jews Can Not Afford" As most Jewish kids I was taught the words to "Hatikvah" before I had learned the "The Star Spangled Banner"

As a young Jewish kid being taken to Bar Mitzvahs, weddings and other Jewish festive celebrations, I can vividly recall my mother would dance with my sister and seeing others, women dancing with women and the men dancing only with men to Hava Nagila, played at every Jewish event. When I asked "Why"? she said, "It wasn't nice for men and women to dance to d together." I said, "How come they sleep together?" Her reaction was to laugh and said to the family sitting at the table, "Look what we have here.... a comedian!"

Sophie Tucker and Bele Baker feuded for years over whose rendition of "My Yiddishe Momme" was more dramatic. I am fortunate that I heard both ladies and it is a toss up. But the winner is Connie Francis whose album sold more copies of that song and other classic Jewish songs than any other singer in Jewish Music history and she was an Italian Catholic. "You Don't Have to Be Jewish" to love and perform this great music of the Jewish people.

As a young and very rebellious kid, growing up in Philly, I would cut classes and going to the Earle theater and be thrilled to the swinging sounds of the big bands. I remember clearly and cherish those memories of seeing Benny Goodman (a Jewish clarinet player) and swinging to "And the Angels Sing" (a Jewish melody) featuring Ziggy Ellman (a Jewish trumpet player) who also wrote it. When Ziggy blew the freilach chorus, the crowd went wild, dancing in the aisles and I realized- "You don't have to be Jewish"

Shalom Secunda, a talented composer and conductor wrote the music to "Bei mir bist du Schon" in 1932 for a Yiddish musical. A Jewish lyricist Sammy Cahn, known for his hits for Frank Sinatra wrote the lyrics and soon after in 1937. The Andrew Sisters not Jewish of Scandinavian heritage recorded "Bei mir bist du Schon" and it became not just a smashing hit, it became the biggest selling record of all time for all of America. Again, "You don"t have to be Jewish"

My parents were not that crazy about Jazz but "Bei mir bist du Shon" was music to their ears by the Andrew Sisters. In trying to convine me, they said, "From my mouth to God's ears I am telling the truth", an old Yiddish saying, the Andrew Sisters were Jewish. Adding to that they told me that Enrico Caruso was Jewish. Because when Caruso coming Italy, he sought out Al Jolson(a Jewish singer) for how to sing and perform. Well "Go Listen"
